Top 10 Most Unusual Dog and Cat Names of 2012

Are you a pet name traditionalist or a trendsetter? While "Bella" and "Max" once again topped the list of most popular pet names last year, many pet owners look for original names that express their four-legger's personality.

For the fifth year, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) celebrates the most clever, creative and quirky names with its list of most unusual pet names. After a thorough selection process, 50 unusual dog names and 50 unusual cat names were chosen from VPI's database of more than 485,000 insured pets and narrowed down with a vote for the 10 most unusual name in each category.

  1. Too cute!!! My dog's names sound common but they each have a story. I love mythology so I've had dogs named Achilles and Persephone. My dog Maya is named from the Hindu Goddess Matamaya. My dog Pierson was not named from mythology. He was named after Pierson Park where I found him.

  2. I'm somewhat of a traditionalist. Though I think registered names should be as fancy as the owner likes (my dog is formally recognized by the AKC as Northbound Fly By Night), I think that a dog's day-to-day name should be one word.

    1. We're pretty much like you in that way. Cosmo's registered name is Noblegold Cosmopolitan Jr. Mint AX, MXJ, CA (and I think there are a few more initials I keep forgetting!). Big name, little dog.... but he goes by Cosmo!
