National Take a Hike Day 2013

Did you know that Sunday, November 17 is National Take a Hike Day?

Neither did I until I received a note from the nice folks at Petmate who alerted me to this special day.  We think this is a terrific idea, even if there does some to be some mystery around the real meaning of the day!

Anyway, we encourage you to get out and take a hike this Sunday. It'll be great for both you and your pup.

And if you do, you might run across something like this...

These are the falls from our recent hike at Fort Mountain.

While we were at Fort Mountain, we learned about this nifty program with Georgia State Parks and the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association (GVMA). The two have teamed up to encourage healthy walks in the woods through the Pets RXercise program.

Through this program, you and your pet can get a free pass for a walk in any Georgia State Park by getting a "prescription" from your veterinarian. The prescription is redeemed for free parking, which is normally $5.

Pets RXercise is part of the Georgia State Park System's Tons of Fun Fitness Challenge, in conjunction with the GVMA. The program is sponsored by Purina Veterinary Diets and Pfizer Animal Health.  You can read more about it here. We think it's pretty cool!

Getting back to Take a Hike Day, we also received some suggestions from Petmate for a few nifty items to take along on your hike!
  • The Petmate Travel Bowls are collapsible, making them easy to take along and fit into small spaces so you'll always have a water or food bowl at the ready.
  • If you're camping or picnicking, the Petmate Pop-Up Pet Tentprovides a shaded home away from home for pets. I think I could fit in there with Rocco! It's constructed from heavy-duty water resistent canvas and folds out in seconds.
  • And of course, don't forget the poo bags! The Arm & Hammer Bone Dispenser and Biodegradable Waste Bagsharness the odor-neutralizing and freshening power of baking soda and the biodegradable waste bags are made from corn starch.

The fun and games continue every Friday with FitDog Friday, the weekly Blog Hop brought to you by To Dog With LoveSlimDoggy and Peggy's Pet Place to promote a healthy active lifestyle for pets (and their people, too!) and to help combat pet obesity. Join in every Friday by linking up your FitDog story or visiting the blogs in the Hop.

UPDATE:  Old posts or new are welcome in the FitDog Friday Blog Hop! Please feel free to share any post you've written that helps promote a healthy active lifestyle for your pets. The more FitDogs the merrier!

  1. That's a neat program you have there. We were thinking of going for a hike on Saturday. Maybe we need to go on Sunday instead.

  3. I won't feel so bad next time tells me to take a hike.

Wow, an Rx for a walk. Not sure if I should smile or cry!

    Good job Rocco.

    1. hehe! We think it's a good thing, but we know you don't REALLY need an Rx to take a great walk or hike! It's a nice program to get vets to start the conversation about pet obesity with their clients though, and that's a very good thing!

  4. We were considering a snowshoe on Sunday; it seems National Take a Hike Day should be at a time of year it is possible to take a hike in more of the nation! ;-)

  5. Thanks for letting us know! It's supposed to be a nice weekend where I live so perhaps I'll take Maya to Clinton Lake before the winter cold sets in.

  6. That is a brilliant idea from the state parks! We would join in a heart beat. As for the pop up tent, we learned that they aren't as durable as one would think. Bailie busted out of hers in less than five mins., we won't ever trust them again.
