Getting a Start on Our First Full Agility Season

Rocco flies over a jump at our last trial
this past May
We're busy preparing for the fall agility trial season, and this weekend we head to Chicopee Woods in Gainesville, Ga., for the USDAA trial.

This will be Rocco's first full agility season, so we're excited to get going! We had an awesome practice on Tuesday night and now we're in our taper.

We're trying to be really conscious not to over train so that Rocco will be fresh and ready to go on Saturday.

So that means that the rest of this week we're doing some light running, walks, some back yard play and a little bit of jump training in the backyard just because it's fun!

We're also doing some stretching for both me and Rocco to keep us both flexible and injury free. And, of course, we're resting too!

Here are a few photos from the last trial we competed in last May.
Wheeee! There's nothing like a good jump!

More jumps!

I think Rocco took a moment to strike a pose for the photographer. I don't remember him doing this!

We're really looking forward to having a fun time this weekend, and can't wait to see how we've progressed since the spring!

  1. I'm really working hard on my nose work for my first trial in about ten days, but our plan is to not do much the last couple days either. Over training is about as bad as under training. Can't wait to hear all about your agility adventures this season!

    1. Yes! It's really easy to get caught up in the training and not know when to stop! Good luck preparing for your first trial!

  3. Agility looks like it's a blast. I've done obedience and field trials. I think my next dog will be an agility dog. My only concern is remembering the course.

    1. Remembering the course seems to get easier the more you do it. You start learning certain patterns and when you break down the course into a series of sequences it become much easier to remember. I think agility is good for keeping our memory sharp, too!

  5. I am an agility ADDICT! Jimmy and I finally earned our MACH back in April. One of the best days ever! I don't practice much at all. Once a week class that means running maybe 3 tough courses, and then a couple times a month a private lesson for 30 minutes. I have some equipment at home but rarely use it anymore.

Those are great photos! Rocco looks like he loves it! Good Luck! Be sure to get a video!

  15. Hey, Just wondering, I only train my dogs at home to do agility but I'd love to start competing so I was wondering how come the coarse changes for each dog?

  16. There are several different events offered that each have different types of equipment. A standard course has all the equipment -- contacts, jumps, weaves, tunnels, etc. While a course like Jumpers With Weaves has only jumps, weaves and tunnels. The courses change at each event to provide new patterns and new challenges for each dog/handler team. Otherwise it would get boring! I'm not sure it that was what you were asking, but hope it helps!
