We talk about healthy weight, good nutrition and exercise a lot here at To Dog With Love. And, with more than 50 percent of pets tipping the scales with excess pounds, we think you never can know too much about keeping your pet at a healthy weight.
Keeping your pets at the perfect weight not only makes them feel and look better (just like with us humans), it also adds to their quality of life and life expectancy. Who wouldn't want to keep their pets around and happy as long as you possibly can!

We also tried out this nifty healthy weight tool to confirm that Rocco is at his ideal weight. With a small dog like Rocco, it's super important to make sure they don't overeat. Did you know that five extra pounds on a small dog is equivalent to over 30 extra pounds on a human? Yikes! That would slow down anyone in a hurry!
Five things you can do right now to help ensure your pet's health and wellness!
- Measure your pet's food every time they eat. We use a measuring cup and save some of the food for treats and training, too!
- Choose an age and size appropriate diet. Puppies need more energy and fat for their growing bodies, small and toy breeds need more nutrition packed into a much smaller meal, and senior animals need less calories and fat.
- Try a new activity with your pet! We love agility, tricks training and hiking and enjoyed trying kayaking this year, too.
- Incorporate more playtime in your daily routine. We love a game of backyard chase, great exercise for both of us!
- Visit your vet at least once a year, or every six months if you have a younger or older dog. Your vet can keep an eye on any changes that might indicate a serious problem, and they can also advise you on weight related issues.
