Make it a Priority to Protect Your Dog from Fleas and Tapeworms with #SentinelSpectrum

Recently, we shared some great reasons why it's so important to protect your pups year-round from parasites like heartworms, fleas and more. Not only does it help protect your dog from health problems caused by parasites, but it also helps keep these nasty bugs from setting up camp in your house.

In a recent survey conducted by Virbac® SENTINEL® SPECTRUM®, dog owners like you were asked about parasite protection and what it means to you. The findings were encouraging AND eye opening.

While an overwhelming majority of you said that protecting your dog from heartworms and fleas is a high or very high priority, 20 percent said you only protect against fleas in the spring and summer months.

THAT can be a big problem and here's why.  Year-round parasite protection is super important and not just for heartworms. Fleas can set up camp in your house and survive for up to year before every finding a host. So don't let them find a suitable host.

Protect your pup year-round!

You might only see fleas during the warmer months, but the thing is, the fleas you see are only a small portion of the population. It's those unseen fleas that can cause BIG problems down the road.  And once you have a flea problem, it can take months to get it under control.

So protect your pup!

Tapeworms are another parasite that dogs can get as a result of ingesting fleas during self grooming, in response to a flea bit or from ingesting a dead animal. Tapeworm infections are usually diagnosed by finding segments which appear as small white worms on the rear end of your dog, in your dog's feces, or where you dog lives and sleeps. Uck!

Sentinel Spectrum can help by controlling fleas, tapeworm, heartworms and other parasites. Lufenuron, a unique ingredient found in Sentinel Brand products, prevents fleas from developing into adults, preventing infestation before it starts.  It's not light sensitive, and, since it's a chew, it can't be washed off... perfect for active dogs and long-haired dogs like Rocco!

Rocco's protected with Sentinel Spectrum year round!

The results of the Sentinel Spectrum Parasite Survey are in!

The great news is that most of you who took the survey are diligent about protecting your pups from parasites and you know your stuff when it comes to fleas and heartworms.
However, there's always room for more awareness when it comes to protecting our pups and keeping them healthy and happy. Here's a look at some of the survey results:
  • 80% of respondents said that heartworm protection was either a high or very high priority to them as pet parents.
  • 84% of respondents said that flea protection was either a high or very high priority for them as a pet parent.
  • 79% of respondents said that they provide their dog flea prevention all year long whereas 20% said that they only provide flea prevention during the spring and summer months.
  • 70% of respondents said that a dog can contract tapeworms from ingesting just one infested flea.
  • 90% of respondents said that tapeworm segments can be found near a dog's anus, in feces and/or where he lives and sleeps.

Why Your Pets Need Year-Round Parasite Protection #SentinelSpectrum

Year-round parasite protection with Sentinel Spectrum #SentinelSpectrum

Years ago when I had my first dog, Thai, I remember fleas being a big problem. It was difficult to keep them under control and I can remember him getting tapeworms as a result of eating some of the fleas.

At the time, it seemed like a never-ending battle against fleas. The good news is there are products available today that have made controlling fleas -- and other parasite risks -- SO much easier.

Rocco's been taking Sentinel products his whole life and with Virbac® Sentinel® Spectrum® we've never had a problem with fleas or any other parasite.

Year-Round Protection is Key

No matter where you live, it's important to protect your pet all year long against heartworms, fleas and other parasites.

You might think that fleas are seasonal critters, but they are amazingly (and unfortunately) hardy pests that can survive the most challenging conditions. They're quite happy setting up house in your upholstered furniture and even in the interiors of automobiles.

And what's worse, the fleas you see only make up a small portion of the population while the fleas you can't see are able to survive in a home for up to a year before ever finding a host!

The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends treating dogs and cats year-round and throughout their life with flea control products to limit infestations both on the pet and in the home.

When it comes to year-round risk, the same holds true for heartworms. Both indoor and outdoor dogs are at risk year-round -- no matter where you live.

If you miss a dose of heartworm protection, any heartworm larvae (microfilaria) that made it into your dog from a mosquito bite in the PAST MONTH can cause an infection. And, it takes approximately six months from the time an animal is infected until it can be detected by your veterinarian because the test detects ADULT worms.

So the best way to protect your pup is not to miss a dose, because the medication is most effective against infections that occurred in the month prior to taking the medicine. And remember, annual screenings with a simple blood test are important to help detect heartworm disease.

Speaking of heartworms, this year the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) is expecting higher than normal levels of heartworm transmission nationwide.

So do your pups a favor and make sure you keep them protected from fleas, heartworms and other parasites all year long

The Dirt on Fleas, Heartworms and More, and What to Do About Them #SentinelSpectrum

Rocco enjoys his outdoor time without worry of nasty parasites

The weather has turned beautiful here in Atlanta and Rocco and I are enjoying lots of time outside. But it’s not all sunshine and lollipops when the nasty parasites come out to play.

You’re probably aware of the need to protect your pup against heartworms and fleas, but there are a whole host of intestinal parasites -- including hookworms, whipworms, roundworms, and tapeworms --  that can invade your dog’s digestive system and can cause serious health problems for your pet.
It all may sound pretty gross, and scary, but it’s so easy to protect your pet. And, prevention is much easier and less costly than treatment.

Rocco just had his annual vet checkup, so while we were there we asked our vet about heartworm and flea protection.  We’ve been using Sentinel for years, and this year our vet told us he’s recommending Virbac®Sentinel® Spectrum®. It’s the pretty much the same thing we’ve been using, but now with added protection for tapeworms.

Rocco gets his checkup and annual heartworm screening

We learned that Sentinel Spectrum
helps keep your dog covered from the six most common parasites.

Here’s a primer on what each parasite is all about

Heartworms can be transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito and the outcome can be deadly. Nearly 300,000 dogs in the U.S. contract heartworms each year from infected mosquitoes, causing lack of energy, weight loss, and breathing problems. It’s a serious disease and so easy to prevent. We’ve always been super diligent about protecting against heartworms.  Prevention is so much easier on your pup, and less costly, than the treatment of this dangerous disease.

Fleas are just gross, right?!  Where there’s one flea, there could be hundreds more waiting to hatch. Fleas on a dog are only the tip of the iceberg. Only 5 percent of fleas are adults, the other 95 percent are eggs and immature fleas living in the environment. And what makes it even worse, the fleas you can’t see are able to survive in a home for up to 1 year before ever finding a host.  Uck.

Not only are fleas nasty… and cause itchy dogs, they can also cause tapeworms, another icky parasite.  Many dogs don’t show signs of tapeworm infection until they are very sick, so it makes a whole lot of sense to take action to prevent tapeworms. Dogs can get tapeworms by ingesting fleas or by eating something that died that had tapeworms.

Speaking of eating something that died….

What are you eating?!!

How many times have you said that to your pup? It’s a common occurrence in our household. Rocco will eat ANYTHING!

Rocco finds all sorts of goodies to eat in the great outdoors!

Which brings us to whipworms, hookworms and roundworms.  Dogs can get any of these simply by eating dirt (or by eating a tempting snack of kitty poo!).  Rocco LOVES dirt… and those other kitty delicacies he sometimes finds in our yard. And to make it even more gross, people can get hookworms and roundworms, too.  In addition to the gross factor, these parasites present a health risk for both pets and humans so it’s important to practice good personal hygiene and protect your pet from these parasites.

So what can you do to protect your pup against these nasty parasites?

First, schedule a vet appointment. You’ll need to get a screening with a simple blood test to make sure your pup is free of heartworm disease.  Then, get a prescription for a parasiticide such as Sentinel Spectrum.

Sentinel Spectrum is chewable so it’s really easy to use and Rocco says it tastes great… like bacon! It’s also the only product that interrupts fleas’ ability to reproduce, so it helps keeps things under control in a big way.

Rocco’s doing great on it and it sure makes me feel better to know he’s protected against all six of these nasty parasites when he’s out there in the great outdoors and finding all sorts of interesting things to eat!
