Adventures with a Dog in Highlands, NC

Cosmo Havanese views Smoky Mountains
Cosmo soaks in the view of the Smoky Mountains on our way into North Carolina
Cosmo Havanese continues his excellent adventure through life with a trip last weekend to Highlands, N.C., and a side trip to Asheville! We'll post a dog-friendly guide to Highlands soon, since we found many more dog-friendly places in person than we found by searching online. But for now, here's a bit about our weekend adventure for the Monday Mischief Blog Hop.

Dog-friendly restaurant in Highlands, NC
Cosmo enjoyed the ambiance at Wild Thyme Gourmet
First stop, a dog-friendly spot for a nice lunch at the Wild Thyme Gourmet Restaurant in Highlands, N.C.  Cosmo enjoyed nesting in the wood chip flooring on the outdoor patio. It was nice and cool for pups and humans with a canopy of trees and umbrellas!

Next, it was time to hit the shops of Highlands. The village was charming and most shops allow dogs inside. Water bowls and dog biscuits also were plentiful!

Dog on 4th of July
Cosmo says, "I'm proud to be an American Havanese, where at least I know there are plenty of noms!"

All the shops were decked out with 4th of July decorations!

There are plenty of dog-friendly hikes and waterfalls to enjoy. It was raining when we drove by Cullasaja falls, but I dodged a few raindrops so you can enjoy the sounds of the rushing water in this video!

  2. Great pictures. I have always found that you come across many more dog-friendly places by just showing up and putting feet to pavement :) The good part too is that the place usually isn't crowded with a lot of other dogs.

  3. Wow! It looks like a great place to visit. I love the video of the waterfall, but it looks a little bit too rough for the dogs to go for a swim.

    Have a great week!

    1. This waterfall was definitely too rough for a dog or a human. There's another waterfall in the area -- Bust Your Butt Falls (hehe) -- that attracted lots of human swimmers. There's a large pool at the bottom of the falls that wasn't too rough. Cosmo didn't go swimming on this trip though. It wasn't too hot and there were plenty of nice hiking trails for a dog. The falls were better to enjoy from a distance!
