RIP Sweet Cosmo Havanese: 9/10/2002 - 12/23/2012

When Cosmo was diagnosed with cancer about four months ago, one of the hardest things to come to grips with was not knowing how the story would end. I did so much research and also read about other dogs with cancer, and so I knew what their stories were, from beginning to end.  I was convinced our story would go on much longer than it did.

Last Sunday, Cosmo's four-month journey with cancer came to an end. The average survival time for a dog with his type of cancer -- a metastatic pulmonary adenocarcinoma -- is nine to 12 months. But Cosmo had responded so well to surgery and then to his chemo treatments that his future was looking pretty bright.

In mid-October, six weeks after surgery and after two of five scheduled chemo treatments, Cosmo looked like he felt great, zooming around and chasing squirrels, above.

I took Cosmo to do all the things he loves, like the lure course he got to run near the end of October, above.

By mid-November, Cosmo seemed a little off but blood work came back normal and chest x-rays showed no sign of lung tumors. Still, we already knew that some of the cancer had metastasized to his lymph nodes. And there was no telling if the Carboplatin chemo treatments were getting rid of all the cancer. He was cleared to travel to Chicago with me for Thanksgiving, and while he was just a bit subdued, he did fine with the trip and seemed to enjoy it.

Above, Cosmo enjoyed some reflection time at the Chicago lakefront.

Cosmo lived every day to the fullest up until his last week in mid-December when he declined rapidly.  I had wondered how I'd know when the end was close, but Cosmo made it perfectly clear by his actions. He had trouble moving and the pain seemed to be too much. We tried every kind of treatment to help manage the pain but it kept getting worse. Cosmo let me know he had lived a full and wonderful life and now it was time to go. His body was failing him, and the Cosmo we all knew had already left us.

Cosmo went to the Rainbow Bridge on December 23, but his life was not about cancer. He was the life of the party -- a sporty, fluffy, handsome fellow who greeted everyone he met with kisses and wags before he asked for belly rubs. He attended every BlogPaws and BarkWorld Expo social media conference, traveled to Italy twice and all over the U.S.

He used social media to help raise money for animal rescue groups across the world. He loved to zoom,  catch discs, play agility, run a lure course, herd sheep and he had started to learn nose works. He just liked to come along, whether it was shopping or to a restaurant.

He'll be missed greatly by both me and young pup Rocco, who came to live us with just four weeks before Cosmo passed on.

I had expected them to have a least a year together and I secretly hoped for a few more, but even in the short time together Cosmo seemed to have an impact on Rocco, teaching him all about toys and treats and how to enjoy a good chew.

And while I miss Cosmo so much, I have absolutely no regrets for the life we led together or the attempt to save him from cancer. I wouldn't do a thing differently, and in that I can find a lot of comfort.

I never really thought about how many folks both Cosmo and I met, through agility, social media and other outings we took. The support of everyone -- from the time Cosmo was diagnosed, up until the end -- has meant a great deal to me and I can't thank you all enough.  I'm so grateful to have Rocco now, and what's ironic is that I started the process of getting another pup even before Cosmo was diagnosed with cancer.

These last few photos are some of the last action shots I took of Cosmo, when he was feeling great in October. He was always ready for a great adventure.

RIP sweet Cosmo Havanese. You may be gone, but you'll live in our hearts forever. ♥

First Weekend! Puppy Rule of 12

Little Puppy can check stroller off his new experience list! Cosmo keeps an eye out for flying squirrels!
First of all, we STILL haven't completely decided on a name for the new puppy. And if you missed our big announcement, you can read more about it here. Percy is the name currently topping the list, coming from the idea of naming the new pup with something that's related to the Cosmos (for Cosmo, of course!) So Percy comes from the name of the constellation Perseus, suggested by Kristine at Rescued Insanity!

I will hopefully make a final decision about pup's name this week!

In the meantime we had a great first weekend, and Cosmo and the pup are settling in together nicely.

Cosmo and Pup enjoy supervised playtime together
The Pup already loves Cosmo and wants him to play ALL the time. Cosmo would rather sleep MOST of the time, so when Cosmo's napping, the pup and I have plenty of time to start doing some fun training and playing.

We've been doing lots of positive socialization, and one of our pals Anna at Happy Healthy Pup reminded us about the Puppy Rule of 12, which is basically having your pup experience 12 different things in a number of categories (like surfaces, locations, people, moving objects, etc.) before they are 12 weeks old.  And most importantly, all the experiences at this crucial age should be positive!

Pup experiences a plush, squeaky toy
So now, Puppy needs a name! If you missed our first naming session or the one over at Eukanuba's Facebook page, please leave your suggestions in the comments below!  We'd love to find a name that honors his Cuban heritage, but I'm having a hard time finding a name I like.

When Beauty is Right Under Your Nose

Today's post is inspired by our pal Sugar the Golden who once a month hosts the See Beautiful Blog Hop. The idea is to create a blog post that made your day, week and/or month ... inspiring you in seeing beauty.

Ours is a simple post today, because sometimes beauty is right under your nose...

... And sometimes it just takes a good friend to point it out to you! Take it from Cosmo... he's a champ at sniffing out beauty!

Does your pet help you find the beauty in things?

USDDN Disc Dog World Finals and Lure Coursing Fun!!

At last weekend's USDDN Disc Dog World Finals in Cartersville, Ga, not only did we get the chance to watch some amazing disc dogs, but Cosmo also got the chance to practice his lure coursing skills.

Here's Cosmo, going wild for the lure! It's hard to believe he had surgery just last month. And for those who have asked, dogs do tend to handle chemo treatments differently than people. Cosmo is in rare form, as you can see, especially considering he had his second chemo treatment five days before running this course.

After a satisfying lure run, we headed over to watch the disc dogs.

All-in-all it was a super fun day! Keep an eye on the USDDN schedule for events in your area.

When a Dog Show is More Than a Dog Show!

This past weekend was a HUGE weekend for dog events in Atlanta. We managed to make it to a few events, including the all-breed dog show in Jonesboro, Ga.

First, we stopped at the Havanese ring, of course!

In case you didn't know, Havanese come in all sorts of colors. Meet Cookie, above, and keep an eye out for her. We'll be following her progress all the way to the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship dog show, where for the first time, "class" dogs can compete. Cookie is entered in the 6-9 month class.

And another tip about dog shows... they also offer a great opportunity to shop for hard-to-find items.  Cosmo was ready to shop, and read on for some great finds! But first, that's our Canine Cool Hipster bag in the stroller with him. You can find out how to win one here.

We spent a lot of time checking out these nifty toys by FitPAWS, above,  from itsallrover.com. We think the peanut that Cosmo's sitting on and some of the smaller balancing discs and donuts would be great for pups starting out in agility so they can get used to various surfaces and types of movement.

We also met Johnny Boy, the famous corded poodle, who also is the cover boy on a new book on how to cord your poodle, coming out soon!

And finally, we stopped at the Pure Paws booth and picked up some extra shampoo. We tried the new H20 Shampoo that made Cosmo's coat super silky. We hear you can use in on human hair too. We'll let you know how that goes!

Then later in the weekend we headed to the USDDN Disc Dog World Finals in Cartersville, Ga. Stay tuned for more photos and fun from that event.

Now, let's see what everyone was up to this weekend!

Strolling, Walking and Running the Morningside Mile for Fire Station #19

October is National Fire Safety Month. And on Sunday, Cosmo and I did our part by participating in the Morningside Mile, a one-mile run, walk or stroll to benefit our local Virginia Highland Fire Station #19,  Atlanta's oldest fire station.

Cosmo shared his stroller with his new pal Jack. The race was only a mile, but we covered three miles in total to get to the start of the race and back home again.

The race welcomed folks of all types, from elite runners to kids and dogs -- running, walking and riding in strollers!

The race ended with a block party...

What party is complete without a game of corn hole!

... and of course the fire engine was there. This is the same fire engine that leads our neighborhood Halloween parade.  Fire Safety Cosmo says, stay safe this Halloween and keep candles and candy away from dogs paws!

Once again it's Mischief Monday, so let's see what everyone else is up to!

Wordless Wednesday: Air Cosmo

Frisbee Havanese

Cosmo's up to his old tricks, chasing a flying disc in the backyard!

Cosmo Havanese Disc

He's feeling great and all his blood work came back normal this week. Great news!

He still has four more chemo treatments to go... next one is October 16.

In the meantime, he'll continue to zoom and fly! Wheeee!

Now let's see what everyone else is up to!

Black and White Sunday: The Cosmo Eye

Black and White Sunday

It's our first time participating in the Black & White Sunday blog hop hosted by You Did What With Your Weiner, My Life in Blog Years and Dachshund Nola.

Cosmo looks pretty much the same in Black and White, except his whites are whiter and his blacks are blacker! Next time we'll try something a little different!

Let's see what everyone else is up to in Black and White!

Monday Mischief: Back to the "New" Normal

If it's Monday, it must be time for mischief! Actually, anytime is a good time for mischief, but this weekend Cosmo was especially glad he was "cleared" for mischief making.

After undergoing surgery to remove a lung tumor, Cosmo got his staples out on Friday and he was cleared to commence zooming again.  He spent the weekend running in the backyard...

Pondering squirrels and birds...

And strolling with me!

You can see how much he enjoys strolling, almost as much as zooming!

As far as his surgery and diagnosis goes, we did get test results back last week that confirmed the lung tumor they removed as an adenocarcinoma. Unfortunately, cancer also was identified in the lymph node sent off for biopsy, so we are evaluating treatment options this week.

In the meantime, Cosmo is feeling great and his appetite and nose for treats is as hearty as ever.  Please keep pawsitive thoughts coming for Cosmo. And, if you're lucky enough to be attending BarkWorld Expo this October, we'll plan to see you there!

Now, let's see what kind of mischief the rest of our pals are up to!
