It's National Love Your Pet Day

Today is National Love Your Pet Day. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but everyday is love your pet day around here!

So here are some FitDog ways I spoil Rocco everyday, and how you can, too!

  1. Take your dog for a walk
  2. If the frigid weather (or snow, or whatever it is in your neck of the woods) is just too unbearable, show your love with indoor games like Find It or Go Hide
  3. Show your love for good dental hygiene and fresh breath by brushing your dog's teeth followed by a yummy dental chew treat. Some of our current faves are Whimzees, VeggieDent Chews, Merrick Brush BonesIndigo Fresh Floss Bones and Zuke's Z-Bones.  Rocco certainly doesn't need an excuse to enjoy a good chew, but it is Pet Dental Health Month, too.
  4. Sign up for a fun class with your dog. You might try agility, nose works, rally, barn hunt or K9 Fit Club, all great ways to bond with your dog and support good mental and physical health.
We also had LOTS of "Love Your Pet Day" emails land in our mailbox this year. Here are a few of our favorite ways that other folks are showing love for pets.

Love a shelter pet, buy a book set

Operation ResCUTE Inc. is a non-profit organization offering limited-edition educational book and stuffed animal sets, where 100 percent of the profits go to animal shelters in support of their adoption efforts.

The Story of Jingles is the first book in the newly launched series, based on the true story of a real life rescue dog. The story aims to teach children empathy and about the benefits of adopting and how to make a difference in the world.

The collectible set comes with an illustrated book, stuffed animal dog from the story and an Operation ResCUTE Club Membership Sticker. Buy the set and help a homeless dog find a loving home.

Love a talking pet and save a vet

Rover.com is introducing the Rover-gram, an app that lets you create a customized talking message straight from your pet's mouth.  Make a custom #RoverGram and share it via email, social channels or embed it. Rover will donate $1 to the military rescue dog charity Save-A-Vet for every use of #Rovergram on social channels.

Love the Oscars, feed a shelter pet

Oscars gift bags are usually chock full of expensive, luxury goodies, but for the second year in a row, nominees in top categories will receive a certificate for 10,000 meals (that's more than $6K worth of pet food) to donate to the shelter or rescue of the celebrity's choice.

Halo, Purely for Pets (co-owned by Ellen DeGeneres) is doing something completely new and bringing pet philanthropy to the Oscars swag bags. For the infamous $160,000 "Everybody Wins at the Oscars" bag that goes to the non-winning nominees in the 5 top categories, Halo is gifting a certificate for a 10,000 meal donation to the celebrities' shelter or rescue of choice, courtesy of Halo and Freekibble.com.
