Consistency: The Key to #PerfectWeight

If you've ever started an exercise or weight loss routine, you know how important consistency is to achieving your goals. It's no surprise the same goes for your pets!

Did you know that pet obesity has become epidemic? More than 50 percent of pets are overweight, and that not only can affect their quality of life but life expectancy, too.

Maintaining a consistent routine is one thing you can do to help keep your pets at their perfect weight, for a happy and healthier pet!

So how can you tell if your pet is overweight? Hill's has a few nifty tools that can help you spot weight gain like a pro and help you confirm your pet's ideal weight

We recently shared some ideas for creating a routine to help keep your pup healthy, happy and at a perfect weight.  The key to success is both sticking to that routine AND keeping it consistent.

Three steps to consistency and success!

Consistency means always acting or behaving the same way. And that means sticking to a schedule and keeping the rules the same, and making sure that the whole family is on board. Consistency keeps things predictable and less confusing for pups, which leads to a happy, healthy and well-adjusted pet.

Here are our three steps to consistency:

Consistent exercise and play

Daily walks, playtime like fetch or chase, and brain games with interactive toys or find-it games help keep your dog stimulated and happy. Don't forget to keep it consistent every day... and that means on the weekdays as well as weekends.

Consistent praise of positive behaviors

Dogs respond well to consistent, positive reinforcement. If you'd like your pup to lie down patiently in their "place" while you prepare their dinner, then reward that behavior! When dogs know what is expected of them, it helps reduce anxiety and reinforces appropriate behaviors.

Remember, when you are training with treats (we also like to reward with kibble), be sure to account for that in your dog's daily food allotment.

Consistency in feeding

You'll want to feed your pets at the same time every day AND be sure to measure out the appropriate amount. That helps take the guesswork out of how many calories you are actually feeding. If you can't be home at designated feeding times, there are automatic pet feeders that make it easy to feed your pet the correct portions on a set schedule.

To find the right amount to feed your pet, start with the guidelines on the package and then adjust according to your pet's needs and activity level.
