Good times at Painting with a Twist!
I have no drawing abilities whatsoever.
So when I heard about Painting with a Twist, a new place in Atlanta where you and your friends get together to paint, drink wine and have a fun night out, I was intrigued... and yes, a wee bit nervous.
I had already heard about this concept from my sister, who got all the painting genes in our family. Her pieces of art looked amazing, but then again she has the talent for it, right?
Nevertheless, I agreed to go and dragged two of my non-artistic friends with me. Safety in numbers, I figured.
The concept behind Painting with a Twist is that you bring your own beverages (wine was the beverage of choice for most of the attendees on our night) and snacks and they supply the canvas, paint and brushes.
They also (THANKFULLY!) provided two professional artists to help us out and give instruction.
We attended on a "paint your pet" night, but they also have nights where you paint one of their existing pieces of art. The artwork ranges from landscapes, abstracts and cityscapes, to creative renderings of seafood, animals, iconic buildings and florals.
Here's how it works
Here's the photo I sent in of Rocco and the provided line drawing
That's where the nice artists came in, they gave instruction on where to start -- we started by filling in the background, who knew!
I went with a dark blue background to offset Rocco gold tones
But after the background, I still had no clue. Rocco has like a jillion colors in him, so where to start?
The professionals said to start with the dark colors first and start to layer, whatever that means.
Uh oh, Could this be right? They told me to trust the process, or something like that.
More paint, more paint! I was apparently being too stingy with my color.
It's starting to take shape. I now see my dog as a bit of purple, blue, red, gold and all sorts of colors in between. Wow! Rocco sure is a dog of many colors.
We saved the eyes, nose and mouth until last. Probably because those are the hardest and they didn't want us to flip out before we even started!
Ta-da!! An artist is born!
My friends' pups came out great, too. You may remember Bingo and Codie from previous posts.
The three amigos in the flesh...
Rocco is also a dog of many expressions, and hair-dos.
We had such a fabulous time and went home with an original painting that we did ourselves!
I can't say enough about how nice and helpful all the folks were at Painting With a Twist in Buckhead. We're ready to go back again!

The partnering nonprofits have included St. Francis Animal Sanctuary, the Al Copeland Foundation, Leaps & Bounds Sports Center and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Check here to see if there's a Painting with a Purpose event coming up near you.
