How you can help adoptable senior dogs

Throughout Pet Appreciation Week, pet lovers across the country can show their support via social media by sharing what’s great about their own senior dogs. For each photo of a seven or older dog posted that includes #MySeniorDog and tags @ProPlan from June 7 - 13, the brand will donate one pound of BRIGHT MIND 7+ – up to 25,000 pounds – to the Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue network to help adoptable senior dogs nationwide.

How BRIGHT MIND helps keep senior dogs sharp and alert

Did you know there are approximately 87 million dogs in the U.S.* and an estimated 44 percent of them are seven years and older?**

That's a whole lot of senior dogs, yet most owners of dogs 7+ are unlikely to think about their dog's experiencing age-related cognitive decline.***

Around age 7, a dog's glucose metabolism in the brain begins to change, which can affect memory, learning, awareness or decision-making.

Why?

A dog's brain relies on energy from glucose to thrive, and around age 7, a dog's brain cells start to lose their ability to effectively use glucose as an energy source which ultimately affects functioning.

After years of research, Purina experts discovered an additional energy source  --  the fatty acids derived from botanical oils called Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) -- that can be used in addition to glucose. As part of an older dog's total nutrition, these MCTs have shown to help promote alertness and mental sharpness in dogs age 7+.

So what does this mean for senior dog owners? The MCTs have been shown to promote memory, attention and trainability in dogs age 7+. Differences you may see in your dog are in his interaction with you, interest in playing and ability to adapt and cope with change.

Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND, with MCTs from enhanced botanical oils comes in three formulas:
  • Adult 7+ Chicken and Rice
  • Adult 7+ Small Breed
  • Adult 7+ Large Breed
Both formulas include:
  • High quality protein, including chicken as the first ingredient
  • Enhanced botanical oils shown to promote alertness and mental sharpness in dogs 7+ within 30 days
  • EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid, and glucosamine to help support joint health and mobility
  • Vitamin A and linoleum acid, an omega-6 fatty acid, for healthy skin and coat
  • Natural prebiotic fiber, sourced from what bran to help promote digestive health
Purina Pro Plan BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+ is available exclusively at pet specialty retailers (Small Breed formula at PetSmart only).

  6. It made me so sad to realize that Bentley was considered a senior at only seven years old. Although I prefer "middle-aged" I still feed him a diet for older dogs. This looks like a great event and a super food!

  13. my oldest is almost 14 and she is having some health issues, recovering for the 2nd time from vestibular and has 2 bulging discs which she did with the first time she got it. the oemga 3 fatty acids are very good for her joints and she needs some help with mental alertness, she lost her hearing abt 3 mos ago as well. i am doing pt with her now at home, i think the botanical oils shown to promote alertness and mental sharpness would help with her since she likes to sleep all day and i have to force her to get up and move sometimes. in the evening when it is cooler, she will still play with her ball, but she needs to strengthen her hind legs
