What's Your Fur-Venture This Summer? The Company of Animals Wants to Know!

Cosmo Havanese enjoys an excellent fur-venture at a recent Lure Coursing event
In honor of their new Facebook page dedicated to their US audience, The Company of Animals is encouraging pet parents to get out and get active with their furry one, and then tell them about it. It's all part of their new social media campaign, "Fur-ventures".

Folks who share their pet adventures on The Company of Animals new U.S. Facebook page will  randomly be awarded special treats. Facebook fans could receive popular products from The Company of Animals – like the Nina Ottosson Interactive Games, The Pet Corrector auditory training tool, the CarSafe seatbelt harness and agility equipment from the CLIX line and much more.

Some ideas to kick off your summer include visiting a new dog park, hiking, throwing a dog-friendly BBQ with your neighbors, or trying a new hobby like dog surfing, agility or lure coursing!

Or plan a dogcation this summer! Look for a pet-friendly destination and take your pup along to share in the adventure!

What fur-ventures do you have planned for this summer?

Five Ways that Pets Add Life!

Another Havanese photo shoot at a recent play day we attended!
Have you ever noticed how people light up when they start talking about their pets? From business settings to meeting folks on airplanes, I've noticed that once pets come up in the conversation, there's no stopping people from sharing details about their pet's antics!

Pets are the great equalizer. They lighten the mood, create a reason to share a smile and bring a sense of calm to their owners.

And that's why it makes us happy to support the Pets Add Life campaign, dedicated to promoting the positive role pets play in the health and well being of people, families and communities. To help spread the word about the joy of pet ownership, Pets Add Life will be introducing some new videos this year, including one with a talking Guinea Pig (who doesn't love a chatty rodent!)

So what else do pets do? Look at the photo above and you'll see a group of folks and pets I never would have met, if it weren't for Cosmo Havanese! Just by having a Havanese, I've met a fabulous group of people and learned whole lot about responsible pet ownership, responsible breeders and the amazing pets you can find from Havanese Rescue.

Happy Havanese!
My top five ways pets add life:
  1. Pets are always happy to see you
  2. Pets keep you healthy-- take a dog walk or a hike!
  3. Pets are a great conversation starter -- people stop me all the time to talk about Cosmo
  4. Pets are perfect cuddlers and will help relieve your stress
  5. Pets are perfect! I can't imagine life without pets and all the fabulous pet people I've met!
How do pets add to your life?

This post is sponsored by the Pets Add Life campaign and the American Pet Products Association. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about the benefits and joys of pet ownership.

Back from BlogPaws and a Little Mischief!

Snoopy's Dog Blog

Yesterday, Cosmo and returned home from an amazing time at the BlogPaws pet bloggers conference in Salt Lake City. We saw lots of old friends and made some new ones too! Today's post is a result of meeting a few new friends, a fabulous blogging dog named Snoopy and his mum Annette over at Snoopy's Dogblog

Annette told us about the Monday Mischief Pet Blog Hop, hosted by Snoopy and his pals Alfie's Blog, Luna, A Dogs Life and My Brown Newfies. So here we go... a little mischief from Cosmo and his new pal Snoopy at BlogPaws!
From left to right, Cosmo, Diane, Annette and Snoopy!
First, Cosmo and Snoopy practice innocent eyes... except you can't really see their eyes. So you gotta know something is up! The dogs also try to fool us with their innocent mischievous grins!

Next, the two soften us up with their intent listening skills. This is what dogs do, so you're less likely to notice mischief is about to occur.

Then, Cosmo shows Snoopy how to be a little pushy. Since Cosmo is smaller, he can push a little harder before anyone notices.

And now it's time for serious business...

Cosmo scopes out the Greenies table while Snoopy keeps watch.

Cosmo shows Snoopy that sometimes the best things are hiding under tables...

... and in other people's swag bags!

After a long day of mischief, there's only one thing left to do...

Recharge again for the next day!

Now let's see what kind of mischief everyone else is up to!

Write a Post, Help a Dog 2012! Pedigree will donate a bag of food for every post written! #BlogPaws #Dogsrule

As we head to this year's BlogPaws pet blogger conference in Salt Lake City, Cosmo and I once again have the honor of participating in the Pedigree Write a Post, Help a Dog campaign! Now in it's third year, the program has generated 650 blog posts and 6.5 TONS of food to help feed shelter dogs!

Here's how you can help too!

Simply write a blog post from now until midnight on Saturday, June 30 and mention Pedigree's commitment to adoption and finding shelter dogs loving homes. For each post, Pedigree will donate a 17-pound bag of Pedigree Dry Dog Food to a shelter in need.

You can use any of the wording or images you find in this blog post. Or perhaps get some inspiration from the Pedigree Adoption website. It's up to you! Just write a post and a shelter dog wins.

Once you write your post, add it to our Blog Hop below, so we can see the collective effort for helping  feed more shelter dogs! And remember, any type of blog can post to help a shelter dog, so please spread the word! Update: Once you post, enter our Rafflecopter giveaway for some fab Dogs Rule swag!

At BlogPaws, along with eight other Pedigree-sponsored bloggers, we'll be handing out postcards like the yellow images you see above. We hope that everyone will write a post and spread the word so we can reach our goal of 450 posts for a total donation of 7,650 pounds of food!

The sooner you post, the more people will see it! So go ahead and Write a Post and Help a Dog! You know you want to!
Cosmo wants you to write a post too! This photo was taken after he worked his paws off at BlogPaws West in Denver 2010, the first year of the Pedigree Write a Post, Help a Dog campaign.  Cosmo reminds you that you can use any of the info in this post, including his photo if you want to!

And here's a badge image you can use too! Feel free to use it in your post or on your sidebar! We linked the badge on our sidebar to http://www.pedigreefoundation.org/.

And now, to officially introduce the Pedigree-sponsored bloggers!

Disclosure: We are sponsored by Pedigree at BlogPaws; we are not compensated any other way for our posts.

7 Things You Should Bring to BlogPaws Pet Blogger Conference!

Cosmo packs the essentials!
If you're one of the 500 or so folks packing for BlogPaws today, here are a couple of tips from a BlogPaws veteran! This will be the fourth BlogPaws for both me and Cosmo so we have plenty of ideas on what to bring for both you AND your pet!

Famous BlogPaws Cheesecake!
  1. Business Cards -- There will be plenty of networking opportunities with fellow bloggers and sponsors so don't miss this opportunity to share information and stay in touch! You might want to stow them in a place that's easy to access -- whether it's an outside pocket on your tote or inside the badge holder provided by the conference.
  2. Camera -- This is a photo opportunity like you've never seen before! If you like to photograph pets, you'll be in heaven! And don't forget to take group shots of your favorite blogger buddies, the fun pet signage and famous BlogPaws Cheesecake!
  3. Smart phone and laptop or iPad -- Keep your smart phone handy for quick pics and videos so you can share them immediately via Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. It's fun to "watch" the action live via social media for both conference attendees and those who are following from home.  We've also heard about a few opportunities to tweet or blog to help support animal rescue, so keep your eyes open for those opportunities. And if we meet you in person, we'll tell you all about how you can Write a Post, Help a Dog through Pedigree's campaign to help feed shelter dogs. And don't forget all your power cords and chargers!
  4. Large expandable suitcase -- Blogger conferences are notorious for having great swag and BlogPaws is no exception! Bring a LARGE suitcase and don't fill it. Then, open the expandable section for all your swag!
  5. Sweater or layering pieces -- Clothing is another topic altogether, but hotel conference areas are typically freezing. So pack some super light items for Salt Lake City temperatures that are predicted to be in the high 90s (yikes!) and add layering pieces for the air-conditioning. I'm packing everything from cute (colored) jeans and tops to summer dresses.
  6.  Your pet's food, treats and toys -- Cosmo and I travel via airplane pretty often, so we've got this down. In addition to making sure your pet is comfortable with their pet carrier, you'll want to bring their familiar food, treats and toys. That'll make them feel right at home and help prevent upset stomachs!
  7. Pet accessories -- Don't forget food bowls, leash, poo bags, medications or anything else that's specific to your pet's needs!

Sniffing Out a Heap of Gratitude: One Million Thanks From Febreze to its Fans!

How long do you supposed it'll take to say "thank you" one million times? The folks at Febreze are estimating three full days to thank each and every one of their one million Facebook fans via a live streaming video on their Febreze  Facebook page!

The "Thank-a-thon" begins today at 10 a.m. ET. Members of the Febreze global teams will be saying “thank you” around the clock – night and day – until they say “thank you” one million times.  Now that’s gratitude!!

To see it in action, go to https://www.facebook.com/febreze.

I know I've used a shot of Febreze every now and then to freshen things up. What do you use to eliminate pet odor?

Wordless Wednesday: BlogPaws IV, Here We Come!

As we head to our 4th BlogPaws next week, you can count on (at least) one thing. Cosmo will be back in the center of things, looking for bellyrubs, treats and toys!

The first BlogPaws, an intimate affair in Columbus, Ohio in April 2010.

The second BlogPaws, September 2010 in Denver, where Cosmo celebrated his birthday with a few hundred of his closest pals.

The third BlogPaws... inside was warm and cozy with our best blog pals while hurricanes threatened outside in Tysons Corner, Va., August, 2011.

Time to start packing! Salt Lake City, here we come!

Behind the Paw: A Day in the Life of a V.P. of Canine Communications

I've got to admit, one of the highlights of my recent trip to P&G Pet Care for Behind the Paw, the influencer summit hosted by Iams and Eukanuba, was getting to see my pal Griffin again. I love a floppy dog, and while "floppy" does not seem to have made the official standard of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, Griffin is a perfectly floppy PBGV in my book!

Griffin strikes an executive pose worthy of his role as V.P. of Canine Communications at P&G Pet Care
I first met Griffin at last year's AKC/Eukanuba National Championship when he was still a pup in training. This April he officially became P&G Pet Care's newest V.P. of Canine Communications.

Schmoozing at the Pet Care offices is just one of Griffin's roles and he did a great job greeting us as we entered the building of the Mason, Ohio office.

Griffin greets the bloggers
Fabulous floppiness with a smile!
After greeting us, Griffin led the way to the meeting room where we met with some of the other P&G Pet Care executives.

Griffin works the room
Griffin shakes paws and exchanges business cards before the rest of the P&G representatives arrive.

Even Execudogs have to have their priorities in order!

A good job if you can get it!
Then, Griffin grabs a quick nap at my feet (awww!) while we hear about Consumer Care at Iams and Eukanuba.

Did you know that the company hosts a Pet Loss line? For anyone who needs to talk to a real person during a time of grieving for a pet, call the Iams Pet Loss Line at 888-332-7738.  Sometimes you just need an ear from someone who understands...

Next we heard from leaders from each brand before embarking on a tour of the building. Employees in the Pet Care area are allowed to bring their dogs to work, everyday!

In true executive fashion, all the former Execudogs, and Execucat, have their portraits displayed where they can be admired for generations to come.

Next, Griffin shows us what a dog in his position does to further communicate his key messages to his constituents.

More toys, please.
And then he takes us on a tour to meet some of his co-workers...

Team leader of treats
Canine communications manager
... And gives us a look at where the pups go outside for their coffee breaks...

... beautiful! Before we knew it, it was time to hit the road for the airport. Thanks Griffin, and all the folks at P&G Pet Care for a great tour and a super summit!

Behind the Paw: P&G Pet Health and Nutrition Center and Leipsic Manufacturing Plant

We recently attended Behind the Paw, the influencer summit organized by P&G Pet Care and its Iams and Eukanuba brands. After spending the first evening engaging in a fun and tasty cooking challenge at  the Dorothy Lane Cooking School,  we got down to business on day two, boarding the MegaBus...
No ordinary bus, the MegaBus became our home away from home for the next two days!
... and spending a full day visiting the P&G Pet Health & Nutrition Center (PH&NC) and the Leipsic Manufacturing Plant.  First stop, the PH&NC.

Staff at the PH&NC spend plenty of time playing with the dogs
Here we learned more about the types of testing done to help make the Iams and Eukanuba brands both tasty and nutritious. We also toured the facility where some 300 dogs and 350 cats live while they participate in the testing. The dogs and cats are given plenty of room to play and socialize, and when they are ready to retire -- at about age six for dogs and eight for cats -- the dogs and cats are adopted out as part of the Companion Connections adoption program.

Another interesting innovation we learned about was the change from traditional dog doors to a saloon style, above. It turns out the doors with a split in the middle help reduce neck strain and eliminate symptoms of arthritis that can be caused from the repetitive motion of pushing open traditional style pet doors.

The cat areas were equally impressive ...
...with plenty of places for the kitties to play and relax.

Since I spent more time running with the Greyhounds at the PH&NC and soaking up the ambiance than taking detailed notes, you might  want to check out a great post written by Dr. Lorie Huston on Pet Health Care Gazette for even more details about the PH&NC.

It truly is an impressive facility with employees who are passionate about the welfare of the animals, and dogs and cats who are well cared for and prepared for life in their future adopted homes.

Next we boarded the MegaBus again for the two-hour drive to a little town in Ohio known as Leipsic, home of P&G Pet Care's Manufacturing Plant.

The plant was equally impressive, with all sorts of quality control and safety measures, nifty electronics and machinery, and employees who were super proud of the work they do.

The plant runs 24/7, producing 24,000 tons of food per month and can run four different kinds of food at the same time.  Here's a look at the plant and some of the terrific folks we met with during our behind the scenes tour.

It was a super opportunity to be able to go behind the scenes at the Manufacturing Plant as well as the Pet Health and Nutrition Center and we'd like to thank Iams and Eukanuba for opening their doors and arms to us!

Next up, a day in the life of a VP of Canine Communications and visit to P&G Pet Care headquarters!

Arriving at Behind the Paw: Cooking for People, Not Pets!

We recently attended Behind the Paw, the influencer summit organized by P&G Pet Care and its Iams and Eukanuba brands. Three action packed days included tours of the P&G Pet Health and Nutrition Center, the Leipsic Manufacturing Plant and a visit with P&G leadership and Pet Care's headquarters in Mason, Ohio.

We learned tons and appreciate the depth of information shared. But more on that part of the summit later. Today we're talking food, and not pet food, mind you!

After arriving in Dayton, our base camp for the visit, we were greeted by the nice folks at Iams and Eukanuba and transported to our first activity, an interactive cooking challenge at the Dorothy Lane School of Cooking.
We were divided into teams, and each team was responsible for preparing a different course, with the help from the expert chefs at Dorothy Lane.

Inside the cooking school, we were given our assignments. The tables were beautiful, decorated in rhodamine pink! Gentlemen (and women), Start Your Blenders!

Team Dessert gets cranking on their course, to the left, while a few of my Team Starch teammates get to work on our Risotto course. Read to the bottom for the recipe... it was delicious!

Outside, Team Meat works tirelessly. Who's doing all the work here?! That's Vicki Seiler and Jason Taylor, two of our hosts form P&G Pet Care, slaving over the grill!

Back inside, Team Starch, also known as Team Risotto, celebrates a bit prematurely. (I still say we were robbed!)

Fellow bloggers Sandra Alawine from Alasandra, The Cats and a Dog and Dr. Lorie Huston from Pet Health Care Gazette are looking smug with their Team Meat platter while their Dorothy Lane coach provides an assist.

The spread was impressive. The risotto, front right, was AMAZING! You can try it at home yourself... read down for the recipe!

A judge was provided a sampling plate. Yum! The winners were....

Team Meat! Even they were surprised!

Even though Team Risotto was robbed, the table did look beautiful and everything was tasty. And even the flat pets at the back of the table were well behaved!

And now, what you've been waiting for!
Creamy Porcini Mushroom and Mascarpone Risotto
(Courtesy of Dorothy Lane Market's School of Cooking)
Yield: 4 Servings

1 1/2 cups boiling water
1/2 oz dried porcini mushrooms
16 oz beef stock or vegetable stock
4 Tbsp Vera Jane's Extra Virgin Olive Oil
3/4 cup finely minced shallots
2 finely minced garlic cloves
1 1/4 cup Arborio rice
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/4 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano Cheese
1/4 cup mascarpone cheese
1 Tbsp fresh thyme leaves

Combine boiling water and dried mushrooms, let stand 10 minutes.
Drain over bowl, reserving the liquid.
Chop mushrooms.
Bring stock and reserved liquid from the soaking of the mushrooms to a simmer and keep warm over low heat.
Heat a large saucepan over medium to high heat. Once hot, add the olive oil. Add the shallots and saute for 3 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for one more minute. Add the rice and chopped reconstituted porcini mushrooms and coat with the olive oil. Add the wine and cook until it has evaporated. Add one cup of the broth and cook over medium heat until the broth has been absorbed by the rice.
Continue to add broth in small increments, letting the rice soak up the liquid completely before adding more. This will take about 25 minutes.
The rice will be done when it is creamy but still has a bit of a bite to it. Once the rice is done add the cheeses, thyme leaves and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
Salt and Pepper to taste

We had a fabulous time with all the bloggers and our hosts from Iams and Eukanuba. Stay tuned for more posts about our visit!
