Should You "Winterize" Your Pet?

(BPT) - The arrival of autumn signals many changes in the household, from switching from salads to soups to pulling sweaters out of storage to changing furnace filters. With pets, however, you may need to think as much about what you don't change as what you do.

Chicago veterinarian Dr. Shelly Rubin is well acquainted with the dramatic temperature swings that accompany the change of seasons, as well as how to help pets and owners cope with them. Following is his list of fall do's and don'ts for pet owners.

* Don't 'fall' off the exercise wagon. With days getting shorter - and cooler - it can be tempting to skip your early morning or evening walk. But with more than half of all pets in the U.S. being overweight or obese, exercise is vital. A daily walk, or several shorter walks, can rev the metabolism of both two- and four-legged walkers for hours.

* Do ensure your pet is outfitted for cooler weather. Small, light-bodied breeds, dogs with very short hair and older dogs with weakened immune systems are likely to need a sweater when venturing outside. And once cold and snowy weather sets in, dogs may require protective footwear to keep their paw pads from freezing.

* Don't assume that cooler weather eliminates the threat of diseases like heartworm, which are spread by infected mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have been known to survive well into the winter months, thanks to indoor havens and protected microclimates existing within larger, cooler climate zones. For this reason, the American Heartworm Society recommends year-round heartworm protection for both dogs and cats.

* Do ensure your senior pet has a warm, draft-free place to sleep. Many older dogs and cats suffer from arthritis. Just as sore joints in people tend to feel worse in cold weather, so it is with pets. A warm cozy bed can make nights - and mornings - more comfortable.

* Do be sensitive to your pets' feelings if fall brings changes to your household. Just like people, pets can get depressed. And if you're missing a son or daughter who has moved away to start college or a job, chances are your family pet is also feeling the loss. Spending time with your pet and giving him an extra measure of cuddling and affection will help both of you feel better.

4th of July Safety Tips for Pets

Cosmo Havanese is ready for the 4th but he won't be attending any firework celebrations

While you're looking forward to 4th of July celebrations, complete with festive barbecues and colorful fireworks, your pets may not share the same sentiments. Sure,  a steak fresh off the grill may smell tempting to Fido, but it's best to keep pets away from human treats as well as booming firework displays.

Keep your pets out of harms way with a few precautions and you'll have a much happier 4th of July. In addition to sheltering your pets from loud noises and dangerous fireworks don't forget that the products and foods that make your holiday barbecue a pleasure may be hazardous to your furry family members.

The ASPCA offers the following tips to keep your pets safe this holiday:

• Keep them home. Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them. The best option is to leave your pup indoors in a safe, secure, escape-proof room. Do not leave pets outside, even in a fenced yard, anytime fireworks might be set off.
• Make it comfy! Set up a comfy bed, food and water. Consider leaving a TV or radio on to drown out the sound of the fireworks and to provide familiar noises. And keep the windows and curtains closed to help muffle the noise and block bursts of light.
• Use Proper I.D. Make sure your pooch is wearing correct identification and tags just in case he or she becomes scared and runs away from home. Microchipping also is a great precaution.
• Keep the goodies at bay! Keep your pet away from used and unused fireworks, as well as alcoholic beverages, human foods and other 4th of July treats since many of these items can be harmful.
• Do not put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers.
• Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets.
• Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.
• Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets’ reach. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could potentially damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or even kidney disease in severe cases. Lighter fluid can be irritating to skin, and if ingested can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

And remember, noisy 4th of July fireworks can be terrifying to pets and can cause them to flee from fright. In fact, July 5 is the busiest day of the year at animal shelters, according to the American Humane Association. So guard your pets from situations that may be dangerous to them and have a happy 4th of July!

What's Better... or Worse? Posting Pictures of Pets or Kids?!

Is there such a thing as posting TOO many photos of Fifi or Fido on you Facebook page? Ironically, I ran across this post -- Posting Pictures of Your Pet on Facebook is Slightly Annoying --  while searching for the perfect Wordless Wednesday photo of my Cosmo Havanese (and getting slightly sidetracked).

Mary Fischer writes:

Pets are cute and sweet and give us a warm fuzzy and all that good stuff. But as much as we love them, they really aren't "kids." We don't need their lives -- which consist of sleeping, eating, and sitting by the front door waiting to be taken out to do their business in the snow -- documented on a Facebook timeline. You adore your pet, we get it. But we don't need a visual every single time Rover rolls over to have his belly scratched.

The bond between humans and their animals is undeniable, but should pets really be treated as kids when it comes to social media sharing?

hmmph... what do you think? (need I ask?)

Basic Training Techniques for your Dog

Whether you've got a new puppy or a dog who needs to learn good manners, training some of the simplest behaviors can make all the difference in maintaining a happy relationship with your dog.

In fact, a survey conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) revealed that 96 percent of dogs relinquished to shelters had not received obedience training. 

Basic training skills can be incorporated into your everyday routine, and it's a great idea to spend just a few minutes each day reinforcing good behaviors. One of the cues Cosmo learned early on is "watch me." We still use this when we're taking walks since Cosmo can get anxious around some bigger dogs. I get Cosmo's attention with "watch me" and then give him a treat to take his attention away from the potentially stressful situation.

Here, Debbie McKnight, training expert for PetSmart, demonstrates the "watch me" cue.



"Watch me" is also useful when we enter the agility ring and Cosmo is distracted by all the other activity, or any time you need to get your dog's attention!

Five (or more) ways to get fit... with your pet... in the New Year

It's no surprise that exercise and weight loss are among the most common New Years resolutions. Just take a trip to the gym in January and you'll see the masses who have pledged to get fit this year.

But after a few months, the newbies start filtering out -- good news for the regulars but not such good news for the fitness of our nation.

So what's a person to do? To relieve fitness fatigue consider getting out and having some fun with your pet. Cats and dogs can both benefit from a little extra exercise too. 

According to a survey conducted by Halo, Purely for Pets*, nearly 89 percent of pet parents want to help their pets get more exercise this year, with the majority (62.4 percent) planning more walks and 68.3 percent committing to play with their pets more often.

Some of the other activities that made the survey list include:

• Finding a new game to play (30.3 percent) -- Try fetching or tossing games. We particularly enjoy tossing a Jolly Ball or the Booda Floppy Disc. Both come in several sizes so you can choose the right size for your dog.
• Go to the dog park more often (20.2 percent) -- Check out this dog park guide from dogpark.com.
• Run my cat up and down stairs (15.8 percent)  -- We don't have a cat in our household, but Cosmo spends a lot of time running up and down stairs looking for his favorite toys!

Also making the list was taking a Doga class and getting into extreme sports. Here are a few more suggestions for fun activities you can do with your dog.

• Take an agility class -- you don't need to have aspirations of competing to benefit from the mental stimulation and physical exercise for both you and your dog.  To find a class near you, check your local listings of search these agility clubs from the AKC and USDAA, two of the several organizations that sanction agility trials.
• If agility sounds too strenuous, try rally -- rally is a great stepping stone to agility or obedience, but again you don't need to compete to enjoy taking a class and getting up off the sofa! Check your local listings for clubs or this list of training clubs from the AKC.

My New Year's resolution? Continue to have fun with pets in 2012!

Atlanta Pet Expo Fun!

Last weekend Cosmo and I headed to the Atlanta Pet Expo, a pet-friendly event filled with lots of fun exhibits and games for you and your pet!  You can find out if there's a Pet Expo coming to your area on AtlantaPetExpo.com and look for the list of upcoming shows at the bottom left.

Cosmo met Shorty from Animal Planet's Pit Boss and Shorty's Pit Bull Rescue.

Shorty signed autographs... that's Hercules in the background.

There were also lots of pet rescue groups and adoptable dogs and cats from all over the state. This is Tiki from Dream Dachshund Rescue.

We also met Matilda, a sweet senior dog from Small Dog Rescue, who also is looking for her furever home.

Cosmo visited with the folks from Good Mews, who have plenty of sweet kitties to adopt.

We've also been asked about the harness Cosmo wore at this event. You can see the Rock Star label in this photo. And on the other side...

... it says Cosmo Havanese! We bought our Julius K9 Harness and ordered the custom name plates from Canis Callidus. Cosmo wears a size Mini.

The Expo also featured an agility demonstration from AKC Canine Partners, the American Kennel Club's program for mixed-breed dogs.

There was also lots more fun and games, including Doxie races, musical chairs and also information about training and supplies. Here, Cosmo hangs with his pal after competing in the Doxie Dash ... yes, all breeds were allowed to compete!
