The Inspiration Behind Santa Paws Drive: Bringing Holiday Cheer to Shelter Pets #BlogPawsGives

This post is sponsored by BlogPaws, a free place to connect with like-minded pet people who are active in social media. I am being compensated to support Giving Month with an inspirational post, but To Dog With Love only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. BlogPaws is not responsible for the content of this article.

December is a month of giving, and so today we want to share with you the story of one of our longest-time social media pals who is tireless in her efforts to help pets in need.

You may have heard of Santa Paws Drive, the yearly online drive to collect toys and cash so that shelter pets can have some joy around the holidays, too. But you may not know the complete story behind the drive. It all started in 2009 as the brainchild of Dorian Wagner, founder of Your Daily Cute. Since then it's grown to help hundreds of shelter pets around the world.

I had the chance to chat with Dorian recently about what inspires her to help shelter pets through Santa Paws Drive and through the Cute Transport Network, created in 2012 to help transport mostly cats and some dogs to areas where they are more likely to get adopted.... (because
cats suffer much higher euthanasia rates in shelters than dogs.)

Here's what Dorian has to say about what inspires her to give to pets in need.

What inspired you to start Santa Paws Drive?

Santa Paws Drive was basically born through my blog – like almost all of the rescue work I do today! I wanted to do something like Toys for Tots, but for animals, and I wanted all Your Daily Cute’s readers to be able to participate and come together for one cause – no matter where they lived.

The only possible way to do that was online!

I had the idea, but I needed help making it happen. So I reached out to two friends who could help do just that – Salina Gannon, who runs NipandBones.com (for the donating online and the “shop” and checkout) and Lynn Haigh, whose dog, Dougal, was a celebrity among Twitter animal friends, raising thousands of dollars through a monthly “Pawpawty” tweetup event.

Lynn and @FrugalDougal could help spread the word and advise on fundraising dos and don’ts. The three of us were the original Santa Paws Drive elves! The first year, each of the elves chose a shelter and Santa Paws Drive collected toys and cash donations for those three organizations. We each hand-delivered them, and seeing the joy it gave all the animals had us immediately already excited to do it again the next year!

Since then we’ve added two more elves – Diane Silver (our PR elf!) and Kerri Heath (our web elf), and we get a little bit more organized and innovative each year. Time flies when you’re having fun, and this is now our sixth year! In the past five years, we’ve raised more than $55,000 in toys, treats and donations for 28 shelters all over the world.

Some of the toys collected in years past for Santa Paws Drive shelter pets
This year we decided to give Santa Paws Drive a bit of a different focus – to help give animals the ultimate gift… a forever home! So far we’ve raised more than $10,000 in just two weeks, so 2014 is on track to be our best yet!

What I love about Santa Paws Drive is that it gives everyone an easy way to help shelter animals, right from their very own home and computer. Every dollar and every share makes a difference, and it’s great to see how many wonderful people come together to make a difference each year!

How did the Cute Transport Network start?

Cute Transport Network happened practically by accident. A wonderful surprise effort that has turned into so much more. Several years ago, I shared a picture of a cat in a local kill-shelter who needed urgent rescue on Your Daily Cute’s Facebook page. His name was Chalse and his bright green eyes had me at hello, but I couldn’t have any more cats.

Chalse, happy in his forever home!
So I shared him, and a woman in St. Louis commented: “I would love to adopt him, but I’m too far.” After reading that I thought to myself that with the thousands of readers, surely we could all get together to get him there, right? A few weeks later, Chalse hit the road to travel 1,500 miles to his happily ever after, escorted by a parade of “Cuteheads” (as I’ve always called the readers!), each one driving a couple hours and then handing him to the next.

We even picked up a second cat along the way in Georgia! After seeing the picture of Chalse and his new parents, my reaction was the same as it was with Santa Paws Drive: we have to do this again! And so we did.

The next lucky cats were two black kittens that headed up to Ohio. And then we helped another, and another, and another…

A recent kitty who found his forever home thanks to the
Cute Transport Network and Good Karma Pet Rescue
And now, just over two years later, the Cuteheads have been able to rescue, save and transport more than 350 cats that would have most likely otherwise been euthanized. We work with a wonderful rescue partner, Good Karma Pet Rescue, who helps coordinate temporary fosters and fund all the vetting and care the cats needs (and it’s a lot!).

Cute Transport Network is essentially the culmination of everything Your Daily Cute has inspired. Our readers come together to make Santa Paws Drive amazing each year, and the connections I make with the rescues we help often continue way past that holiday season.

Many of the Santa Paws Drive rescues have become Cute Transport Network partners, and we are able to essentially “shuffle” cats from down south to those rescues where, instead of dying here in an overcrowded shelter, they will get adopted very quickly!

And like Santa Paws Drive, the most wonderful part of this is how everyone can help and come together to make it happen. None of this could happen without such a dedicated, caring, amazing and special army of Cuteheads, who drive these lucky kitties far and wide to make their dreams of a forever home come true.

If you could ask folks to do one thing to help pets in need, what would that be?

The one thing I’d ask people to do is to do something. Anything. Every little bit helps, and the more we do, the more we can help. Volunteer (or even just visit!) a shelter or rescue and play with the cats and help socialize them and brighten their day. Happy kitties get adopted faster!

Donate money to your favorite LOCAL rescue. It’s very easy to send a check back in the mail when you get a plea from the Humane Society or the ASPCA, but your local rescues are usually run by just a few very dedicated people, and they are almost always struggling for donations to make ends meet.

It’s not that the national organizations couldn’t use the donations (remember, anything helps!), but by supporting the rescues in your community, you can help the little guys who are often the ones doing the most.

Donate your extra towels and sheets, food, litter, toys, or supplies such as paper towels and bleach to a local rescue. All of this costs money, and when they are running on donations only, the budget for these items is often a very large part of it. By helping with this, you help free up more funds for vetting and more.
Share pictures of the animals in your shelter. Social media is a powerful thing, and often all it takes is one little click for someone to end up seeing their new furry partner for life appear in their newsfeed.

My recommendation: Share, but share with care. Avoid screaming in all caps or writing hysterical ranting posts along with them. You want to capture people’s attention, pull heartstrings, and evoke compassion to help the animals – not scare people away or incite a comment-riot that won’t help the animal at all.

Hopefully one day in the future we’ll be able to save them all.

Thank you Dorian for the great tips all you do to help the animals in need!

Help Us Help Shelter Pets: Santa Paws Drive Donations Now Open!

If you've been following us the past few years, you may know that we're honored to be among the "Elves" to help with Santa Paws Drive, the first-ever online toy and treat drive dedicated to  delivering holiday cheer to shelter animals worldwide.

In the past four years, the Santa Paws Drive has raised approximately $45,000 in toys, treats and cash donations for 24 shelters worldwide. Wow! That's a lot of donations! And we did it all with the help of pet lovers and brands who have generously donated to the cause.

Just a few of the donated toys!
This year, Santa Paws Drive is supporting six animal rescue groups that do outstanding work to help animals in their communities. Prior to the official launch of Santa Paws Drive 2013, animal lovers from all over the world sent in nominations for hundreds of worthy animal shelters.

Six shelters were chosen based on need and nomination note. Five are in the United States and one is Kabul, Afghanistan.

The 2013 Santa Paws Drive shelters are:

  • Rikki's Refuge - Orange County, Virginia
  • Good Mews - Marietta, Georgia
  • Union County Animal Control - Cobden, Illinois
  • Nowzad - Kabul, Afghanistan
  • Contra Costa Humane Society - Pleasant Hill, California
  • Ruff Start Rescue - Princeton, Minnesota

The goal of this year's Santa Paws Drive is to raise $1,000 in cash donations for each one ($6,000) plus enough toys and treats to make sure each animal at each shelter receives a gift.

How you can help!

Make a donation (no amount is too small, or too large!) at SantaPawsDrive.com or by using the handy donation widget on our right sidebar. You can donate cash or dog or cat toys and treats. We make it easy so all you have to do is choose how you'd like to help the shelter pets and click to donate!

We'll also have a special on-line raffle starting up soon with great prizes you can bid on!

If you're a brand, it's still not too late to donate. You can contact our elves workshop and we'll work out the details to help you donate raffle items.

Some happy recipients of 2012 Santa Paws Drive donations!
The donations will be divided between the shelters and shipped off in giant gift packages to the lucky dogs at cats at each one in time for Christmas. The last day for cash donations is December 20.

The last day for toy and treat donations is December 13, so the Santa Paws Drive elves can have enough time to sort all the items, pack them up and ship them off in time for Christmas delivery! Donations can be made online at SantaPawsDrive.com or on our handy widget on our right sidebar.

Shelter kitties enjoy receiving their 2012 donation package!
We hope you'll join us in helping the anipals who need it most this holiday season!  In addition to donating, here are a few more ways you can help just by spreading the word!

Donate toys and cash for the animals who need it most!

Our goal is to send oodles (yes, it's the technical term for lots of joy!) of toys and treats and $900 to each nominated shelter this holiday season.  You can donate toys, treats or cash and every single dollar helps a shelter animal. Seriously, no donation is too small (or too large!). If you have a little extra pawket change, here's where you can donate!

So far, we've raised bunches of toys (much smaller than oodles) and $368 in cash, so we have a way to go still. Toy and treat donations can be made until December 12 and cash donations can be made until December 20, 2011. (The elves need a few days to get everything packed on Santa's sleigh for delivery to our shelters!)

We pause a moment for a PSA from one of the rescue kitties!

Adopt Marvelous Mickey from Blind Cat Rescue in North Carolina and he will help you sweep! Take a look!

Please help us spread the word and consider helping the animals with a donation too!

Santa Paws Drive 2011: Nominate Your Favorite Shelter Now for Online Pet Toy Drive!

This is the story of five pals who met on Twitter and how together, with the support of pet lovers everywhere, we'll help bring some extra joy to shelter animals this holiday season.

Just think about it... many of us shower our pets with gifts during the holiday season, but what about the shelter pets? Don't they deserve some holiday cheer too?

That's what Dorian Wagner, founder of YourDailyCute.com, was thinking when she wanted to start a "Toys for Tots" type of program, but this one would help shelter animals and provide them with toys and treats during the holiday season. So Dorian reached out to four of her like-minded blogger pals (including us!) who continue to work together to make the dream grow.

Now, kicking of its third year, Santa Paws Drive is the first-ever online holiday toy drive dedicated to helping shelter pets worldwide. The five of us Elves will work tirelessly (like Elves do!) to deliver toys and some extra cash to needy pets and animal shelters this holiday season.

Here's how it works and how you can help!

Starting today, we're officially taking nominations for shelters to benefit  from our third annual Santa Paws Drive. This year, we are focusing on shelters and rescues who make the extra effort to help special needs pets. These might be pets who need a little more attention or medical help like senior pets,  FIV+ or FeLV+ cats or other "less-adoptable" animals like black dogs and cats.

Nominations accepted through October 21

To nominate your favorite shelter who goes above and beyond to help special needs pets, please fill out our nomination form before October 21, 2011. Shelters can be anywhere in the world -- there are no boundaries for helping these special pets!

We'll choose six shelters based on need and your nomination notes and announce them before the giving part of the Santa Paws Drive starts on November 1. Starting November 1, you'll be able to donate toys, treats or money to send directly to these special pets to help make this their best holiday ever!

Putting the FUN in FUNdraising

As always, we'll be hosting some fun Twitter pawties and raffles to help raise more money, toys and awareness for the special needs shelter pets throughout the holiday season. Stay tuned for more details and dates, and we hope you'll join us in the fun!

Remember, all the Santa Paws Drives donations can be made online so it's super easy to help. And once the giving part of the drive starts on November 1, we'll also have widgets and flyers for you to share to help spread the word... and help more anipals who need it most!

Then, once all the toys are counted and all the donations have come in, the Santa Paws Elves will pack up all the goodies and ship them off to each shelter in time for Christmas.

Santa Paws Drive Brings Holiday Joy to Shelter Animals

I don't go anywhere without my big green bone. I want all
the shelter animals to have special toys too! --
Cosmo Havanese
Because shelter pets deserve toys too,  a couple of our best pals created the Santa Paws Drive -- an online toy, treat and donation drive designed to bring holiday cheer to shelter pets this season. While we're all warm and cozy at home with plenty of food, toys and treats, we'd like to think the shelter animals can have a little something special too. The Santa Paws Drive makes it easy to help.

Just go to the donation tab on SantaPawsDrive.com and choose what you'd like to donate. The Santa Paws elves have made it super easy to choose from dog toys, cat toys or cash. The elves will take care of all the shipping and send the goodies off to six shelters across the world.

Here are a few other ways to help too!
  • Buy a $1 raffle ticket for a chance to win some great prizes from some generous sponsors. All proceeds raised will go directly to the shelters.
  • Participate in one of the Santa Paws Drive special events to help raise awareness AND have a great time!
  • Spread the word by writing a blog post, tweeting (#BeTheChange #SantaPawsDrive), posting to Facebook and then add your link to the list below so we can see our collective effort!

Special thanks to the elves behind the Santa Paws Drive: Your Daily Cute, PawPawty, Nip and Bones and The Kitten Crew!

December 10 is the last day for treat donations and December 20 for cash donations so what are you waiting for!!  It's time to get hopping!

Pet-spiration: The most inspiring pet parents I know! #momblogoff

Because pets are the new kids, tonight we're participating in a Mommy Blogoff at the WXIA-TV studio in Atlanta. It's all part of social media week in Atlanta -- a week of all sorts of events around the city to showcase Atlanta's involvement in social media.

Even Mom bloggers need to eat, so we started the evening with a nommy (that's "tasty" in pet speak) cajun-creole spread from Nawlins restaurant in East Atlanta Village.

But now for the reason we are here. We were just given five topics from which to choose and we are being challenged to write a post about one of them.  I'm choosing "Mom-spiration: The most inspiring parent I know" because our pals in the anipal (that's our animal pals for you mommy bloggers) inspire me every day.

One of Cosmo Havanese's  first pals on twitter was Frugal Dougal, creator of the world famous PawPawty. With the help of 100's of animal parent volunteers participating in PawPawties each month, we've raised nearly $40,000 for animal welfare charities across the world!

Portrait of Cosmo Havanese by artist @BZTAT
Now Frugal Dougal and our pals at Your Daily Cute and Nip and Bones are kicking off the second annual Santa Paws Drive, the first ever virtual toy drive for pets!! If you like kids, you gotta LOVE pets, so check it out and see how you can pawticipate!

Another one of Cosmo's first twitter pals was @Brewskiebutt. Brew is a kitty, but his mom @BZTAT paints wonderful pet portraits. See the portrait BZTAT did for us at left!

Now, BZTAT, known in the real world as Vicki Boatright, is planning a 24-hour paint-a-thon this weekend! Along with eight other bloggers who will also be blogging for 24 hours, the group who is led by Dr. V. of Pawcurious, are raising funds for various animal charities. Your can read all about it at Pawcurious!

With so many amazing pet-spirational parents in our community, it's impossible to mention just one, and even more impossible to list them all. So I'll leave you with this video that sums it all up.

Turn up the volume. Way up!! Pass the tissue's please!

Thanks to Frugal Dougal and his mum Lynn Haigh of Dougals Den and PawPawty for this amazing video from BlogPaws earlier this year.

Don't Stop Belieeeeeeeeving!
