Take a Walk, Help a Rescue with ResQwalk Mobile App

I was recently introduced to the ResQwalk, a mobile app that allows animals lovers to raise money for rescue groups just by walking… and now I'm addicted to it!

I will say, if you're going to have an addiction, this is a good one to have! ResQwalk not only motivates me to get out more often to walk Rocco, it also allows us to raise money for our favorite rescue groups every time we go for a walk. 

And that is good for our hearts in more ways than one!

The app launched this past June for IOS and now it's also available for Android devices.

Here's how it works

Each week ResQwalk announces a donation pool. In order for a rescue to receive a portion of that week’s pool, their supporters simply need to start the ResQwalk app when they go for a walk or run. At the end of each week, donations are distributed to the rescues proportionally to the total distance walked by their supporters.

“Our vision is to give people a platform that enables them to easily integrate ‘giving’ into their daily routine. Often people don’t have the time to foster a cat, the space to adopt a dog, or the time to volunteer. ResQwalk gives everyone the opportunity to help animals in need on a daily basis without disrupting their regular schedules,” said Founder Bailey Schroeder.

Since launching on June 26th, iOS users have walked over 190,000 miles and $33,400 have been donated to animal rescues across the United States and Canada. There are over 1,000 benefiting organizations on the ResQwalk app.

Both the iOS and Android ResQwalk apps now include a leaderboard that enables users to track how many miles have been walked in support of their favorite rescue throughout the week. 

ResQwalk’s donation pools are funded by a combination of corporate sponsorship dollars and sales generated in the shop section of the app. BarkBuddy (a Bark & Co company) is the current corporate sponsor and deals from Coupaw.com, in combination with ResQthreads products, are powering the shop section of the app.

June is Adopt-a-Cat month, started by the American Humane Association to help spread the word about the many cats in shelters who are in need of loving homes.

It's especially important this time of year -- known as kitten season -- when thousands of newborn kittens join the millions of cats already in shelters across the country. 

And while this is the perfect time to rescue a kitten, you might find out like Ginny did, that the perfect cat might just rescue you first!

I recently had the chance to chat with Ginny about her adopted cat, Nugget, and how it was love at first sight!

On February 22, 2014 I wandered into the Atlanta Humane Society to find my perfect feline friend after leaving a very traumatic job.

I moved to Atlanta, Georgia from California two days after graduating form the University of California, Berkeley in dreams of following my passion to make an impact in urban education reform. After many months of severe depression and extremely dangerous actions that were spiraling out of control, I knew I needed to walk away from my work and focus on my mental health before I completely lost myself. 

I had an amazing circle of friends, roommates, and boyfriend, but with no job, and no immediate family in Georgia the loneliness sitting at home while my support system was working was unbearable. It was then that I knew that I needed a companion who was always there to comfort me on my painful journey of recovery.

I always loved cats. Since I was in elementary school I rescued feral cats and would take them to animal shelters so they could be rescued into loving families. Yet, every cat that I owned was never my kitty. It only seemed natural that at this time in my life I would rescue my kitty... Insert my quirky, cuddling calico, Nugget.

As I drove up Howell Mill Road to the Atlanta Humane Society I was certain I was going to rescue a kitten or two, because having a cat from the time they are tiny is all that I knew. I found one adorable kitten I fell in love with, but as we played she seemed very disinterested in me and she hated being held. However, she was so darn cute it didn't matter to me, I was ready to sign the papers and rescue her. 

That was, until this cat with too short of legs for her long body, and super soft fur was playing with another family. She stopped playing with the other family, walked straight over to me, jumped up, sat right in my lap and began kneading on my thigh and purring intensely. She looked right up at me and did one of her, now ever so familiar, chirp meows, and went back to purring. Like that, I knew she was the kitty I always dreamed of calling my own.

It has been almost four months since I have had my Nugget, and every day she brings a smile to my face. With her quirky habits of army crawling under the bed covers to the way she insists that I cannot watch anything on my computer while laying in bed without her laying on my chest so she blocks what I am trying to watch, her never ending love is more than I could ever ask for. When I reflect on this painful period of recovery, Nugget has been pivotal in saving my life. 

There's nothing like cuddling up with a Nugget and a good book!

I went to the Humane Society that day looking for a male kitten, and ended up rescuing a five-year old female kitty and I would not have it any other way. I am so glad that I did not overlook adult cats just because they are older, because they need homes just as much as kittens. So June is a very special month, and I hope that you find a cat that is just as special as my crazy calico.

5 Ways to Help Pets on Your Drive Home From Work

Lending a hand for pets in need is always a nice thing to do, but it doesn’t have to be a huge production. Sometimes, it’s the littlest gesture that makes the biggest impact. Here are a few pet-loving tasks so simple, you can do them for your local shelter or rescue on your drive home from work.

1. Take a Dog for a Walk or Offer Some Playtime

This is an easy, fun, and incredibly helpful way to lend a hand. By volunteering to stop by the shelter and take a dog for a quick walk or play chase-the-mouse with a cat before heading home, you make the lives of those running the shelter (who are likely spread a bit thin) a little easier, and you give a pet some well-deserved attention. You might even make a new friend in the process.

2. Bring Office Supplies

Helping pets can start with helping the people working for them. A simple way to help out your local shelter is to drop off a few office supplies every so often. Pens, pencils, Post-Its, legal pads, paper clips -- anything your office has in surplus they’d be willing to donate, or anything you have lying around your home. People tend to forget the clerical side of running a shelter, but as anyone who has ever worked in one can attest, there is no shortage of paperwork.

3. Bring Over Dinner

As quick as a trip to the local pizzeria, throwing your shelter an impromptu pizza party is a great way to let them know how much you appreciate them. Two pies and a couple of two-liters are the universal sign for “thanks.” Homemade goodies like a batch of cookies will score big, too. Just be careful about bringing homemade treats for the pets -- shelter rules might not allow the workers to share anything unlabeled by a manufacturer with the pets. But you can always bring some extra store-bought treats.

4. Give Some Cleaning Supplies

Things like soap, hand sanitizer, or all-purpose cleaner are often on short order at animal shelters, so if you have time to stop in to the local supermarket and drop a few bucks on cleaning supplies, everyone at your neighborhood rescue would be grateful.

5. Give Them All the Plastic Bags

You know that pile of plastic bags under your sink, or in your closet, that is starting to get out of control? Why not take half (or all) of them to some people who can put them to some real use? Just think -- if your local shelter is home to 40 dogs, that’s 80 walks a day, and 80 good reasons to have a plastic bag on hand. Cats need litter boxes cleaned every day, too. Your shelter staff will seriously thank you.

Help Us Help Shelter Pets: Santa Paws Drive Donations Now Open!

If you've been following us the past few years, you may know that we're honored to be among the "Elves" to help with Santa Paws Drive, the first-ever online toy and treat drive dedicated to  delivering holiday cheer to shelter animals worldwide. 

In the past four years, the Santa Paws Drive has raised approximately $45,000 in toys, treats and cash donations for 24 shelters worldwide. Wow! That's a lot of donations! And we did it all with the help of pet lovers and brands who have generously donated to the cause.

This year, Santa Paws Drive is supporting six animal rescue groups that do outstanding work to help animals in their communities. Prior to the official launch of Santa Paws Drive 2013, animal lovers from all over the world sent in nominations for hundreds of worthy animal shelters.

Six shelters were chosen based on need and nomination note. Five are in the United States and one is Kabul, Afghanistan.

The 2013 Santa Paws Drive shelters are: 

• Rikki's Refuge - Orange County, Virginia
• Good Mews - Marietta, Georgia
• Union County Animal Control - Cobden, Illinois
• Nowzad - Kabul, Afghanistan
• Contra Costa Humane Society - Pleasant Hill, California
• Ruff Start Rescue - Princeton, Minnesota

The goal of this year's Santa Paws Drive is to raise $1,000 in cash donations for each one ($6,000) plus enough toys and treats to make sure each animal at each shelter receives a gift.

Help Feed Animals in Need with Natural Balance

Here's another way to help feed more dogs who need it most!

From now through August 31, "LIKE" the  Natural Balance Facebook page and they'll donate one pound of food  to Angels in Fur Dog Rescue for each new Facebook fan!

Since 2006, Angels in Fur has rescued and rehomed approximately 1,000 abandoned dogs from the pound or neglectful owners, many needing orthopedic surgery and months of rehabilitation. The campaign runs from July 30 to August 31 to donate up to 5,000 pounds of food to this very special group.

Bloggers Unite for Dog Rescue

Today we're participating in Bloggers Unite for Dog Rescue, a special online global event held on July 23, 2012 stressing the importance of dog adoption. The event is brought to you by Dog Rescue Success, Blog Catalog and BTC4animals.com and a global online community of bloggers who are joining forces to help save the lives of dogs in need.

The initiative is calling for dog lovers everywhere to spread the word about dog adoption so that less dogs will wind homeless or neglected.

There seem to be two related but distinct messages from today's initiative:

1. Spread the word about rescuing dogs from shelters instead of purchasing a dog from a pet store that may be getting their dogs from puppy mills
2. Continue to educate people so that they understand the time and commitment it takes to take care of a dog, so that dogs will remain in their forever homes, forever

We also want to point out that whether you rescue your pup from a shelter or choose to purchase a dog from a responsible breeder, it's important to do your research up front so that your furry friend will be a great partner for you and your family for the long haul. 

And, even if now is not the best time for you to welcome a new pup into your household, here are a few ways you can help doggies everywhere.

• Volunteer at a local shelter or rescue organization. Rescue groups like Mostly Mutts in our area hold adoption events nearly every weekend and they rely on volunteers to help staff events like these and others. 
• Donate to your locate shelter or rescue group. While cash is always needed for vet bills and other needs, rescues often will list products they need on their websites. Also ask your locate rescue if they can use a donation of products or gift certificates that can be used for auction items at rescue  fundraising events.
• Foster a dog. Many rescue groups, including breed rescue organizations like Havanese Rescue rely on foster homes to care for pups before they can be adopted.

Help Pedigree Help Dogs at its "Every Dog, Dog Show" #Dogsrule

Around the time of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Pedigree has typically kicked off its annual Adoption Drive campaign. Over the years, with the help of dog lovers everywhere, Pedigree has been able to raise more than $7 million for this cause.

This year, Pedigree will be launching it in a different way. No longer the sponsor of the Westminster Dog Show (which airs Feb. 13-14 this year), Pedigree is turning to other ways to celebrate every dog, both purebred and mixed.

From now through 11 p.m. ET on Feb 14, Pedigree is holding an "Every Dog, Dog Show" in its Facebook community. For every dog lover who interacts with the Pedigree Adoption Drive Facebook page, Pedigree with donate a bowl of food... up to 500,000 bowls. Upload a photo of your four-legged friend or share your pup's story. That's all it takes, and Pedigree with feed homeless dogs in shelters and breed rescues.

The Numbers Are In! Iams Home 4 The Holidays helps more than 1 Million pets during 2011 campaign

Thanks to pet lovers everywhere, Iams Home 4 the Holidays found forever homes for more than 1.2 million animals during this season's pet adoption drive.  In addition, pets in need will benefit from the 5 million bowls of food that pet lovers helped to donate through efforts on Facebook, Twitter and blogs... including To Dog With Love!

Since the program began 13 years ago, Iams and founding partner Helen Woodward Animal Center, along with more than 4,000 animal organizations from across the globe have helped more than 7 million pets find forever homes.

2011 Iams Home 4 the Holidays milestones:

• Dogs win by a nose –This year, more dogs were adopted, with 651,224 finding new families, compared to 595,000 cats and 21,317 other pets (including rabbits, reptiles, horses, birds and more)
• Millions of pets now have homes – Since 1999, a total of 7,034,989 animals have been adopted through the program
• Cards for a cause – More than 1,000 cards were created and shared from the Iams Facebook page, generating thousands of meals donated

The 2012 program will begin in October.

Each year from October  through January, the Iams Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption campaign seeks to place orphaned pets into loving homes. And since it began 13 years ago, the program  -- along with more than 3,500 pet adoption centers and rescue organizations -- has helped 5.8 million families experience the joy of pet adoption, including 1.1 million pet adoptions from last year's campaign alone.

This year, the goal is to adopt out 1.5 million orphaned pets and also to donate 5 million meals through the Iams Home 4 the Holiday Bags 4 Bowls program.

From now until 11:59 p.m. ET on Thursday, Dec. 15:

Atlanta Pet Expo Fun!

Last weekend Cosmo and I headed to the Atlanta Pet Expo, a pet-friendly event filled with lots of fun exhibits and games for you and your pet!  You can find out if there's a Pet Expo coming to your area on AtlantaPetExpo.com and look for the list of upcoming shows at the bottom left.

Cosmo met Shorty from Animal Planet's Pit Boss and Shorty's Pit Bull Rescue.

There were also lots of pet rescue groups and adoptable dogs and cats from all over the state. This is Tiki from Dream Dachshund Rescue.

We also met Matilda, a sweet senior dog from Small Dog Rescue, who also is looking for her furever home.

Cosmo visited with the folks from Good Mews, who have plenty of sweet kitties to adopt.

We've also been asked about the harness Cosmo wore at this event. You can see the Rock Star label in this photo. And on the other side...

... it says Cosmo Havanese! We bought our Julius K9 Harness and ordered the custom name plates from Canis Callidus. Cosmo wears a size Mini.

The Expo also featured an agility demonstration from AKC Canine Partners, the American Kennel Club's program for mixed-breed dogs.

There was also lots more fun and games, including Doxie races, musical chairs and also information about training and supplies. Here, Cosmo hangs with his pal after competing in the Doxie Dash ... yes, all breeds were allowed to compete!

Donate toys and cash for the animals who need it most!

Our goal is to send oodles (yes, it's the technical term for lots of joy!) of toys and treats and $900 to each nominated shelter this holiday season.  You can donate toys, treats or cash and every single dollar helps a shelter animal. Seriously, no donation is too small (or too large!). If you have a little extra pawket change, here's where you can donate! 

So far, we've raised bunches of toys (much smaller than oodles) and $368 in cash, so we have a way to go still. Toy and treat donations can be made until December 12 and cash donations can be made until December 20, 2011. (The elves need a few days to get everything packed on Santa's sleigh for delivery to our shelters!)

Atlanta Animal Rescue Groups Help Pets and People Too

Last weekend Cosmo and I attended Dogtoberfest, a fun event hosted by one of our local doggie treat bakeries, Taj Mahound. In addition to a fun Halloween costume contest, best trick contest (which Cosmo won!) and great raffle items, we also had the chance to meet several local animal welfare organizations and a few adoptable pups too!  Here's some info on these pawsome groups.


Animal Action Rescue
Founded in 2003, Animal Action Rescue is an Atlanta-based non-breed specific animal rescue organization. They are dedicated to the rescue of animals from high-kill shelters, promote spay/neuter programs and provide education for each pet they place. Dudley, pictured above, comes from Animal Action Rescue!

Caring 4 Creatures

Caring 4 Creatures is an Atlanta-based non-profit animal welfare and rescue organization, and has helped 800 animals find loving forever homes since 2008. The dream of Caring 4 Creatures founder Karen Ragusa is to build a compound where animals can be properly vetted, loved and nurtured by people who come to partner with them and share in the recovery and healing process. Doggie Harmony

Doggie Harmony is a rescue group focused on finding the right homes for dogs in foster care or belonging to owners who wish to re-home them. Ahimsa House
Ahimsa House is Georgia's first and only 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to helping the human and animal victims of domestic violence reach safety together. Ahimsa House provides emergency shelter for pets while their families seek safety themselves. They reunite pets with their families once everyone is safe.

Cosmo hangs out next to the Ahimsa Dog House and hopes that all pets and people find their furever homes soon!

P.L.A.Y. Auctions Celebrity Signature Pet Beds to Help Animals in Need

More than 100 stars from today's biggest TV shows autographed one of two beds from P.L.A.Y.'s Artist Collection. The sassy Heels and Boots bed features signatures from 27 Dresses star Malin Akerman and Whitney Port from The City, while the classic Footprints bed boasts autographs from America's Best Dance Crew and Extra host Mario Lopez and many others!

Founded and based in San Francisco, P.L.A.Y. is proud their hometown is considered one of the safest in the nation for homeless cats and dogs and they want to keep it that way. That's why they are auctioning off both beds and donating 100 percent of the proceeds to the SF SPCA.

Paws for Japan: Help World Vets Help Japan Animals

Today, the online pet community is coming together as we have done so many times before... this time, to help the pets affected by the earthquake and tsumami in Japan. World Vets is in Niigata, Japan with a shipment of veterinary supplies. They are headed out toward the hardest hit areas to make assessments and provide relief.
